We move from these first four words to the third chapter of Genesis which is a summary of the Bible. In this third chapter we have the disobedience of man and the fall of man, leading to the death sentence placed on man because of his sin. Also, in this third chapter we have the first promise of a solution to this sentence of death. God promised to those listening; Satan, Adam and Eve, that sometime in the future that the seed of woman would crush the head of Satan or of evil even if Satan will have bruised the heal of that seed.
For the next hundreds and even thousands of years, the Bible gives us account after account of how mankind, all sharing the curse of sin, move forward and backward in their relationship with God. Man at times chose to obey God and received the abundant blessings of God while at other times chose to follow a path of his own design and suffered the punishment and withholding of what God desired to share with His creation.
Galatians 4:4 says “But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law.” God provided His promise at just the right time; in Luke chapter one is the story of the messenger of God visiting a virgin girl named Mary that was to be the human mother of God’s Son and the seed of woman promised back in Genesis 3. In Luke 2 we have the report of the birth of the Son of God and the beginning of journey of Jesus to the cross where Satan as promised would bruise His heel but more importantly; the death of the woman’s seed on the cross may have fulfilled the promise of the bruising but three short days later Jesus arose from death crushing forever the head of Satan and making a way possible for the return to God as he intended when He made man in the Garden.
Jesus purpose for coming to this world is given to us in Luke 19:10 “For the Son of Man (Jesus) has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” This actually means that Jesus came to seek and to save all because we all are lost and without hope. Jesus seeks and the Holy Spirit draws us and we have the opportunity to make an eternally important decision; if we chose Jesus then we receive eternal life but if we follow our own design and path then we remain in that death sentence passed long ago.
Don’t get the idea that if you don’t choose Jesus and if you are sent to Hell, the place of the death sentence, you are wrongfully sent. You are not going to this death sentence because of the sin of another but because of your sin. In Romans we are told that ‘all have sinned’; every person ever to live with the exception of Jesus is guilty of sin.
After Jesus arose from the grave, He visited with His disciples and many others for some forty days then to be taken up to Heaven to prepare a place for all those that have and would make the choice of Jesus instead of death eternally. In John 14:2-3 we have, “In My Father’s house are many mansions, if it were not so, I would have told you, I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.”
Yes, the seed of woman did as God had promised in the Garden and then returned from where He came to prepare a place for all those that would accept what was offered. These verses in John tell us that Jesus is going to return. We don’t know the time but we do have this promise just as we had the promise of his arrival. All we can do while we fulfill our journey here is to choose Jesus and what He did in our place on that cross and once that choice is made spend the remainder of our life in service to Him, doing as He directs us each day.
In Revelation 22:20 we have “He who testifies to these things says, ‘Surely I am coming quickly.’ Amen, even so, come, Lord Jesus.” In the next to last verse of God’s Word the Son of God says He is returning quickly. As true as the promise of a seed to crush the head of Satan was so are these words of that Seed. Don’t hesitate to choose Jesus today. I know it sounds so dramatic, but tomorrow may never come for you, you may have no further opportunity. How important is all this? Your eternal destiny depends of you and the choice you make. If you do nothing you are bound for eternal death in Hell and you are there because you abstained from making the choice of Jesus. You sent yourself to hell if you go there; don’t blame any other.
From cover to cover, yes, I skipped much of what God included in His Word but if you will for now just concentrate on this small part of the total and accept all I have said as truth since it is the word of God then you will have life eternal. After this most important step has been taken then you can search further in God’s Word for the map for your next steps.
